Intro to Lead Climbing

This course is designed for climbers ready to take the next step from top-rope climbing to leading routes outdoors. Participants will learn the essential skills and decision-making strategies for safely leading sport climbs, including clipping technique, route reading, safe falling, building/cleaning anchors, and lead belaying. The focus is on developing sound judgement, good habits and confidence for lead climbing on bolted routes.

Program Details

Itinerary

Pre-Course:

  • Check gear fit and confirm meeting location and logistics.

Day 1: Field Session

  • Introductions, gear check, and safety overview
  • Review of knots, equipment, anchors
  • Rope setup and lead belay technique
  • Lead belay practice and setup for mock leading
  • Clipping technique, rope management as a lead climber
  • Lunch
  • Mock lead climbing
  • Fall dynamics, catching/taking leader falls with practice
  • Guided practice in mock lead or lead climbing
What to Bring

Clothing & Gear:

  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate outdoor clothing
  • Closed-toe approach shoes or light hiking shoes
  • Climbing shoes
  • Food and water for a full day outside
  • Daypack (Must fit all required equipment. We recommend >20L.)

  • 2 locking carabiners
  • Quickdraws
  • Personal Anchor System or Double Length Sling
